News from the farm

The rivers are low. The Embudo and the Rio. Snows have almost finished melting on the peaks. Praying for rain or trying to imagine rain falling. Spotted a pair of Lazuli Buntings with chicks near the Old Spanish Yellow Cherry tree. Smart birds. These cherries are insanely good. Also the nut-hatch fledglings living in the yellow Delicious apple tree survived the magpies and the cats, and flew off successfully with their parents. Just inherited another 7 hens from a ranch in Capitan. They are a bold bunch and don't like to be in their pen. They fly out to beg during dinners on the patio. Goat heads are spreading rapidly into the newly irrigated acreage of the farm in frightening profusion.
Speaking of goats, our four goats (Fudge, Peanut Butter, and kids, Float and Root Beer) gathered up their courage to finally cross the ditch over a thin board and now graze in the lower part of the farm. After many hours of drywall hell, Laura and I have managed to move out of the laundry room and up to the second story of the addition. My vision for a very rich, layered, dynamic food forest with bio-intensive irrigated terraced steps is coming into focus. No end in sight for the work involved but the ideas are flowing. Not very many apples this year but lots of D'Anjou Pears. When it rains it pears!

Soilutions is excited to kick off its 20th Anniversary with a ‘SOILebration’ – We Are All Part of the Cycle! The theme celebrates the connections we share by completing the organics cycle—from those who commit to recycling their organic waste instead sending it to the landfill to those who return those organics back to the earth. The event is free and open to the public.
There's a great lineup of musicians planned, including Boris McCutcheon and the Mighty Salt Licks, Kimo Liscious, and Andean music by Fidel and Marcelino. There will also be an ‘Ode to Compost’ open mic contest, with prizes for best original song celebrating composting and organics.
Come join us on Saturday, November 12th, from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Soilutions composting yard, 9008 Bates RD SE in Albuquerque.
